chills and pain

February 3, 2012 by davebob   Comments (3)

I recently have had times when I will just be sitting there and my legs will start to feel cold (my lesions are in my T-6 thru T-11) my upper body will feel fine. But then they will continue to get chilled and I even have some pain with it. They will feel very cold but warm to the touch. It last for an hour or so and it doesn't seem like the blanket I put one has much effect. Just wondering if any one else has felt this way. Another interesting chapter in the life with NMO.

Hi! I have this in my feet every single day. They most definitely hurt and initially they weren't cold, but now, after several months, they are cold to the touch. The only thing that seems to help is stretching and rubbing the skin.

I've had cold feet and lower legs for a number of years. They're especially bad in cold weather, but are there even in hottest summer months. My left (weak) side is the worst and that side almost always feels cold to the touch. You're right about a blanket not helping much. I do use microwaveable Bed Buddies and a heating pad with an automatic turnoff, being careful not to get these too hot in the first place so that I might burn my skin. Another thing that helps is rubbing and massaging them.

My neurologist says that it's not a typical circulation problem, but it's instead that our NMO affected muscles just don't push the blood through like normal, and thus create the feeling of cold. That's my layperson take on what he said :-)

Anyway, I hope your chilly extremities warm up, and know that you're not alone. Kathi

I have the opposite problem, my left leg and foot get a hot, burning sensation from the inside that can get real uncomfortable. It usually goes away after a few hours though, and so far I haven't had to take anything for it. Strange, because I don't have a visible lesion on my cord and only had one (long) episode of numbness and sensory deprivation on my left side about 6 years ago...long before I was diagnosed with NMO.

I hope you find a good method of relief for your symptoms soon.
