Re: [Devics-spectrum] NMO Diaries

June 16, 2011 by kendall   Comments (0)

That is just so exciting.  NMO awareness has expanded by leaps and bounds, thanks to the Guthy Jackson foundation.  The ability to make connections and distribute info thru such beautiful brochures is really going to help save lives of those with NMO living and suffering under an MS diagnosis.

This is a dream come true for Grace, Tim (RIP) and myself and others involved in the support group from the beginning.  Helping people get educated so they can be proactive with the info they have gained.

This is truly amazing - Thank you Victoria & Ali and the whole Guthy family.

xoxo, kendall

Consortium for MS Centers

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 08:12 AM PDT

I was thrilled to be invited by The Guthy-Jackson Charitable Foundation to help out at the Consortium for MS Centers this year.  The Consortium, which was celebrating their 25th anniversary, was held in Montreal, Canada.  My task: attend the conference, work the trade booth, and create awareness about NMO (NeuroMyelitis Optica).  A quick 40 minute flight from Toronto, this was a rewarding experience.

2 worthwhile things I learned:

  • I met a Physical Therapist who worked with an NMO patient suffering from frequent and crippling spasms (I remember them – they were horrible!).  Their treatment plan consisted of Botox injections into the heels of feet to interrupt the signals triggering the spasms.
  • “Patient Activation” was a term a MS patient used when she described managing her disease.  We aren’t always motivated to do something, like workout, but if we just do it (patient activation) we’ll find that within a few moments of the activity we find the motivation and can accomplish the task.

My neurologist thought it was trigeminal neuralgia; it didn't affect my vision at all but it did make my brain tingle, I'm not sure if it was caused by a lesion in the brain or sinus infection, it persisted for about two months, glad it's gone and hasn't come back. Thanks!

My friend e-mailed me back and said that the vibrating in her brain and "weird brain feeling"  like she's looking out of a fish bowl, has remained.  The others, tingling in breast and cold spots all over, have come and gone.  She saw her primary yesterday and he maintains his claim that it is anxiety and depression.

It is the brain thing that concerns me.  Just wondering if anyone else has had it.  I need to ask MS'ers since they have more brain issues.  Grace are you connected with any MS groups?  I am not currently.  Thank you so much for allowing me to reach out for my friend and her sister.  Most of us know how frustrating it is to NOT know and wish someone helped us find answers, when the docs, like primaries don't.  Even if it is because they don't know.

Hi Kendall,

Depression can cause some really weird physical sensations.  I've fought depression for years.  Anyways, whenever I get really bad, my lips and fingertips feel numb and tingly but it's not the same as the numbness and tingling that I have from NMO.  Was just at the pdoc's today for a meds tweak.  I successfully eliminated two of my heavy hitters---YAY!---and they've been replaced with other drugs.  Nothing that has the potential for addiction though---I refuse to go there.

Odd symptoms?

May 19, 2011 by kendall   Comments (0)

Hi all,

I have a question about symptoms. I have a friend whose sister is having some symptoms and the doctors have told her . . . . anxiety and depression. She is not dx with anything but has had the following:
tingling in her breasts
cool spots all over
vibrations in her head

I believe the first two symptoms have not remained but she is still feeling vibrations.

it doesn't sound like NMO but thought I'd ask if anyone has experienced or heard of these. We know how serious it is to be dx and how that will not happen when the doc has already dx w/ depression and anxiety.

Thank you so much, xoxo, kendall
